September 9th, FASD Awareness Day! Bringing attention to the issue of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder. According to recent data, every year in Alaska, more than 160 children are affected by some type of prenatal alcohol exposure. When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol it travels through the baby’s bloodstream the same way it does the mother’s bloodstream. However, the developing fetus’ liver is only half as effective at burning off alcohol as the adult liver. As a result, the infant is likely to have low birth weight, physical damage, behavioral problems and intellectual impairment. FASD is 100% preventable. Please do not use any substances while pregnant.
